What is an ectopic pregnancy?

In a normal pregnancy, fertilization takes place in the ovaries and after that it moves to the uterus through the fallopian tube for the baby to grow. But in an ectopic pregnancy, the pregnancy get implanted and grows outside the uterus anywhere in the abdomen, usually in the fallopian tube. Ectopic Pregnancy, is a rare form of pregnancy. The ratio of having ectopic pregnancy is 1 in 50.

Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

A woman faces the symptoms of the ectopic pregnancy after five to eight weeks of the missed menstrual cycle and it can go and undetected for a longer period of time, if the pregnancy is somewhere else in the pelvis cavity.

Some common symptoms of it are as follows:

*Pelvic area pain which may be all over or restricted to one side. Pain can range from mild and dull to severe and sharp.

*Vaginal bleeding may be only spotting.

* Vomiting and nausea

Diagnosis: Through pelvis examination, ultrasound and serial Beta-HCG titres

Treatment of Ectopic Pregnancy:

There are two treatment options

 1. Medical Management- Here the methotrexate is given to kill absorb the pregnancy tissues and save the fallopian tubes.

 2. Surgical Management- In adverse circumstances when the bleeding tends to occur in the tube emergency surgery is required. This can be done via laparoscopy.

Causes of Ectopic Pregnancy

Any infection or inflammation of fallopian tube increases the chances.

Age >35 years, history of smoking, any pelvic/ abdomen surgery.

History of previous ectopic pregnancy increases the chances.
