A nosebleed is a very common condition, and anyone can develop a nosebleed at any point in their life, just like any other medical issue. Often frightening when you see blood coming out of your nostrils. However, most instances of nose bleeding are not serious, and you can often manage them yourself. However, if you experience frequent nose bleeds or you bleed heavily during an episode, there may be something wrong within your body that requires evaluation from your ENT doctor.
A nosebleed (epistaxis) occurs when the blood vessels inside the nose rupture and start bleeding. The inner lining of the nose contains delicate blood vessels that can break easily because of dryness, injury, or irritation.
There are two main types of nosebleeds
Anterior Nosebleed: It occurs in the front part of the nose.
Posterior Nosebleed: It occurs deeper inside the nose and may be more serious.
The main symptom is bleeding from one or both nostrils. However, other signs may include
Sudden flow of blood from the nose.
Blood dripping down the throat.
Frequent episodes of bleeding.
Dizziness and difficulty breathing.
If the bleeding lasts more than 15–20 minutes or occurs repeatedly, medical evaluation is necessary.
Nosebleeds can occur due to many reasons, ranging from simple environmental factors to medical conditions.
Dry air or weather changes.
Nose picking or injury.
Allergies or sinus infections.
Frequent sneezing or coughing.
Use of nasal sprays.
High blood pressure.
Blood clotting disorders.
Deviated nasal septum.
Infections.
Accurate diagnosis of recurring or severe nosebleeds helps in the prevention of further occurrences.
Doctors may perform
Physical examination of the nose to check for visible bleeding points or irritation.
A review of the medical history, determining symptoms, frequency of occurrence, types of medications, as well as existing medical conditions.
Blood tests to check for clotting problems, infections, or other medical problems not associated with the nosebleed problem.
Nasal Endoscopic examination is performed to check deeper areas of the nose in patients with frequent nosebleeds.
Imaging tests such as CT or MRI are recommended if structural issues like a deviated septum are suspected.
Early diagnosis of nosebleeds aids in the treatment of the current episode and aids in reducing the chance of having any further nosebleeds in the future.
